R. Lawrence Ives, Ph.D.
Dr. Ives received his Ph.D. from N.C. State University in plasma physics and
began his microwave career in the Gyrotron Department at Varian Associates,
Inc. in Palo Alto, CA. In that position he was responsible for designing electron
guns, gyrotron circuits, collectors, and waveguide components. Gyrotrons are
high power, high frequency microwave and millimeter wave RF sources used for
fusion research and industrial heating.
Dr. Ives founded Calabazas Creek Research, Inc., which is involved in development
of high power RF sources and components. The company is also a major developer
of advanced design codes for sources and components.
Dr. Ives was principle investigator in programs for numerous devices,
including a 1 MW CW waterload for Gaussian mode gyrotrons, a multi-stage
depressed collector for gyrotrons, improved magnetron injection guns,
multiple beam devices (klystrons and inductive output tubes), field emission
cathodes, terahertz RF sources, and advanced cathodes for high current
density, long life applications. He specializes in microfabrication and
computer optimization for advanced 3D devices.
Dr. Ives is president of the corporation and responsible for technical
direction and coordination with customers and strategic partners.
